08-09 Hawks Season Review (Offensive Production) · Thursday September 11, 2008

Will the Hawks offensive show up this season?

You would think so. The Hawks only scored 132 goals last year; fewest in WHL history.

But that was the same story, the year before when the Hawks scored 146 goals.

An offensive improvement should be a slam dunk, until you look closer at the roster.

The team comes into the season losing 4 players and 33% of the team’s offensive production:

Jacob Dietrich 16 goals, 6 assists, 22 pts
Tyler Swystun 12 goals, 22 assists, 34 pts
Keith Voytechek 6 goals, 10 assists, 16 pts
Tristan King 9 goals, 16 assists, 25 pts

Total 43 goals, 54 assists, 97 pts

So who is going to produce the offense?

The new young talent the Hawks have been acquiring and drafting will get that chance.

In pre-season,

Killian Hutt acquired in a trade for Tristan King has shown some real offensive ability. Ken Hodge, Winter Hawks general manager, had this to say about Killian, “He is an offensive player who loves to score. He sees the ice very well, plays with a lot of energy and a great hockey sense. Killian loves to compete and we believe that he will be able to score at this level.”

Brad Ross (16) a number 1 pick has played well in pre-season, but will take time to figure out the league and his team mates.

Riley Boychuk (17) the previous year number 1 pick has been injured most of 07-08 and hasn’t had a chance to show what he can do.

Last year, the fans got a chance to see 15 year old Taylor Peters (16) play and he didn’t disappoint, scoring 2 goals in the 5 games played. He showed on-ice poise, a physical presence and some scoring ability. I am looking forward to seeing more of him this year.

This is a good group that will give the Hawks a future, but not be ready to carry the team’s offensive load.

That will depend on the improved play of Chris Francis (19), Matt Schmermund (20), Radim Valchar (19) and Luke Walker (18).

Chris Francis 10 goals, 13 assists, 23 pts
Matt Schmermund 8 goals, 12 assists, 23 pts
Radim Valchar 9 goals, 15 assists, 24 pts
Luke Walker 9 goals, 12 assists, 21 pts

Totals 37 goals, 52 assists, 89 pts

Excluding Chris Francis playing some defense last year, this group played major minutes with little offensive results.

As a comparison last year,

Kelowna’s Colin Long (19) provided 31 goals, 69 assists, 100 pts out pointed our 4 top returning forwards.

On the plus side, for the last 23 games we acquired Colin Redding (18) from US Hockey who totaled 3 goals, 3 assists, 6 pts. He has played well in pre-season.

Could we find some offense on defense. Defencemen Travis Ehrhardt and Travis Bobbee were brought here specifically to improve the power play and score some goals. Last year,

Travis Ehrhardt 7 goals, 22 assists, 29 pts on 54 games
Travis Bobbee 5 goals, 6 assists, 11 pts on 47 games

Both have offensive upside.

Defenceman Brock Cornish (19) was also brought in for offense, but season ending shoulder injury keep him out of the 07-08 season. The good news is he is back and could add some goals from the backline. As a 17 year old with Tri -Cities he totaled 3 goals, 7 assists, 10 pts on 31 games.

As the exhibition season nears the end, it looks like more of the same this year.

For the first 6 exhibition games, the Hawks have scored 13 goals and gave up 27.

Looking at the last 6 games of the 07-08 season, the Hawks scored 14 goals and gave up 26.

Yesterday, coach Rich Kromm states in the Portland Tribune article, “I think we can compete with any team.”

Rich, when you start stating, we can compete with any team in the league, I will have little more confidence that we are moving off the bottom.

Hawks vs. Chiefs - Game 66 · Thursday March 6, 2008

First two shots, two goals was all the Spokane Chiefs needed to coast to a 5-1 win over the Portland Winter Hawks on Wednesday night in Spokane. It was the Hawks 21st loss in a row.

This immediately got Kurtis Mucha off the bench and Jordan White was done for the night.

Mucha finished the night stopping 40 of 43 shots in relief.

Portland’s only goal came in the opening minute of the third period when defenseman Travis Bobbee’s point shot glanced off a defender in front of Armstrong and went into the net.

Spokane finished 2 of 9 on the power play; Portland was 1 of 4.

Spurgeon had a goal and three assists to lead Spokane. Chris Bruton had one goal and two assists; Mitch Wahl two goals; and Drayson Bowman two assists.

Rockets vs. Hawks - Game 65 · Tuesday March 4, 2008

The Kelowna Rockets defeat the Portland Winter Hawks 2-1 giving the Hawks their 20th loss in a row.

Kyle St. Denis and Lucas Bloodoff scored for the Rockets, once in the first and once in the second. Bloodoff’s goal was a power play goal and turned out to be the game winner. It occurred when Tyson Barrie’s dump-in from center hit a notch in the glass and the puck kicked into the slot area giving Bloodoff an open net.

Portland’s goal came late in the third period, on a power play, when the Hawks pulled goaltender Kurtis Mucha to give them a two-man advantage. Chris Francis found Tristan King at the bottom of the left face-off circle and King slid it home just inside the post to cut the lead to one goal. A mad scramble in the final seconds of the game provided a spirited finish in front of the Rockets net but no goals.

Note: 16-year old Defenseman, David Watt, had a impressive Home debut. Look forward to watching his development.

He is a fifth round selection in the 2006 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft and had an impressive showing at the 2006 Rookie Camp that earned him an early invite to the Main Training Camp.

Watt has just finished his season with the Big Country Energy Tigers (Medicine Hat) of the Alberta Minor Hockey League. No stats are available.

In 2006-07 Watt posted 25 points on 11 goals and 14 assists with 102 penalty minutes in the South Central Alberta Hockey League.

Hawks vs. Silvertips - Game 64 · Sunday March 2, 2008

The Portland Winter Hawks scored twice in the final minutes to force overtime against the Everett Silvertips, but Dan Gendur scored with just six seconds remaining to lead the Silvertips to a 4-3 win.

Gendur provided the same OT game winner, same team and same result as the 1/23/08 game against the Silvertips.

The Hawks were down 1-0 after one period on a power-play goal by Jordan Mistlebacher eight minutes into the opening period. The Hawks spent most of the first period hitting the cross bar, but no goals yet.

After a scoreless second period, the Hawks tied the score on a wrist shot from Chris Francis in the slot just under seven minutes into the third period. That lasted one minute and Everett came roaring back with two goals, one by Gendur and the other by Zach Hamill to take a 3-1 lead with eight minutes remaining in the game.

Portland pulled goaltender Jordan White in the final two minutes and the Hawks capitalized twice, first by Tristan King and the second by Keith Voytechek, to force the extra session.

With only 6.5 seconds remaining in OT, Gendur’s shot from the blue line snuck through the body of White to end the contest.

The Hawks have shown something they haven’t in a long time. Outplayed an opponent and still lose. They are close. This type of effort tonight at home is going to see the losing streak end.

Hawks vs. Cougars - Game 45 · Thursday January 17, 2008

Radim Valchar and Kurtis Mucha carried the Portland Winter Hawks to a come from behind 3-2 win over the Prince George Cougars.

Radim Valchar scored the tying goal in the third period and then scored the lone goal of the shoot-out. Goaltender Kurtis Mucha was solid as usual giving up two power play goals in the first an then shutting down the Cougars the rest of the way.

The win was the first in four games and broke a 13 game road losing streak. It was also the first shootout overtime win and the second win against any opponent.

The Cougars battled hard to the net in the first period, forging a 2-0 lead on a pair of power-play goals by Justin Maylan,

Portland got back within a goal in the second period when Chris Francis snapped home a shot from the circle on a 5 on 3 power play, set up by Travis Ehrhardt and Jacob Dietrich.

The Hawks evened the score early in the third period when Valchar found a rebound of a Scott Gabriel entry shot and filed it into the open net just 1:17 in the final period. Tyler Swystun also added an assist on the play.

Here are some quotes published in the Prince George Citizen:

“I thought we stopped going to the net,” was the blunt assessment of Cougars assistant coach Wade Klippenstein one night after the Cats (14-29-1-1) ended a six-game losing streak with a 5-2 win over the Hawks (9-35-0-1).

“We took some penalties, and (in the second period) we got a bad break when one of our guys shot the puck over the glass and it put us down two players. Their guy made a great shot to score, but we had chances to score in overtime.”

But at CN Centre, the first period was the only one in which Portland goaltender Kurtis Mucha would allow a puck to get behind him. The 18-year-old, who some call the best goaltender in the league in large part because of the heavy workload he handles backing the league’s weakest team, finished with 26 saves, none bigger than the rash of chances he turned aside in overtime.

“We had to find a way to get it done,” said Portland coach Richard Kromm, the former NHL player whose club won for just the third time in 21 road contests.

“We showed determination and Mucha was very good for us. He’s been steady all year. We haven’t been good defensively in front of him on most nights, and we’re starting to build. This is a young team and you’re going to see mistakes, and we have to stay patient. That can be tough for him.”

Next up Everett away.

Tbirds vs. Hawks - Game 38 · Wednesday January 2, 2008

The Hawks could not recover from a 2 goal deficit in the first giving the Tbirds a final 6-3 win at the MC. The Tbirds closed out the year with another win over the Hawks.

“Tonight we were right there,” coach Rich Kromm said. “A couple of mistakes and a couple of selfish penalties cost us.”

“We’ve got to look at the new year as a clean slate,” he said. “With what we’ve got here we feel confident we can do some damage.”

Seattle jumped out to an early lead with goals from Jan Eberle and Ian McKenzie in the games opening 11 minutes.

Radim Valchar cut the lead in half with a top-shelf goal on a power play at the 15:30 mark of the first period, highlighting another strong showing from him and his line mates, Matt Schmermund and Jacob Dietrich. With their aggressive skating and checking, the three were at the heart of numerous scoring opportunities.

Chris Francis scored Portland’s second goal unassisted 2:13 into the third period. After out shooting Seattle 14-8 in the first period, Portland was outshot 32-22 in the final two periods.

Kurtis Mucha stopped 34 of 39 shots in net for Portland while Jacob DeSerres stopped 32 of 36 Portland shots for Seattle.

Warriors vs. Hawks - Game 36 · Saturday December 29, 2007

The Hawks after a 3-0 goal lead at 1:47 in the second period disappeared in the next 38 minutes to give back the 3 plus 1 for a final 4-3 loss. In the final 2 periods the Hawks could muster only 11 shots giving up 36.

As the Moose Jaw Herald states:

When a team pours as many shots as the Moose Jaw Warriors did against the Portland Winter Hawks, it’s almost a matter of time before they start going in.

The Hawk back line missing (Kerr, Morrow, and Gabriel) were worked over all night. Bo Montgomery who spent the first 5 minutes in the PB could have just as well spent the rest of the night there. He Ponich and Bobbee, look like deer frozen in head lights watching as the Warriors skate bye.

To find something positive: the Hawks played a good first period looked dangerous on multiple opportunities…Mucha was outstanding all night.

Chiefs vs. Hawks - Game 31 · Monday December 10, 2007

The Portland Winter Hawks rallied from two goals down in the final two minutes to force overtime against the Spokane Chiefs. The Chiefs pulled it out in the shoot-out, to win 5-4. For most fans at the MC this was a real winner for the Hawks.

Spokane came into the game as the top team in the WHL and ranked #2 overall in the entire Canadian Hockey League.

The Hawks pulled Kurtis Mucha twice in the final two minutes and scored both times as Jacob Dietrich and Kevin Undershute scored to force overtime. Undershute’s tying goal came with just 18.4 seconds left on the game clock.

Portland took a two-goal lead early in the second period after goals by Luke Walker and Chris Francis, but Spokane rallied for four consecutive goals to take a 4-2 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the third period. Spokane got goals from Chris Langkow, Drayson Bowman, Chris Bruton and Jared Spurgeon.

Travis Ehrhardt had two assists, setting up both the third and fourth goals for Portland. Bowman and Bruton each added assists for two-point nights as well for Spokane.

After a scoreless overtime, Jace Coyle scored the lone goal in the shoot-out for Spokane as the second shooter for the Chiefs. Dustin Tokarski stopped Undershute, Tyler Swystun and Ehrhardt to preserve the victory. Kurtis Mucha stopped Bowman and Ondrej Roman in the shoot-out as well.

Mucha stopped 47 of 51 Spokane shots and received the number one star of the game.

Hawks vs. Blazers - Game 28 · Wednesday December 5, 2007

The Kamloops Blazers scored five unanswered goals to rally from a two-goal deficit and defeat the Portland Winter Hawks 6-4.

Tyler Shattock scored twice and Brock Nixon and Juuso Puustinen each chipped in with two assists as the Blazers ended a 3-game losing streak.

The ‘Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Keith Voytechek – 28 seconds in – and Matt Betker before Ivan Rohac cut the Portland lead to 2-1 late in the first.

Chris Francis restored the 2-goal lead with a powerplay marker early in the second only to have the Blazers get that one back – from Tyler Shattock – just 34 seconds later. The Blazers then rattled off three more goals in a span of 4:24 – from CJ Stretch, Shayne Wiebe, and Brady Calla – to take a 5-3 lead to the room after 40 minutes.

An early third-period two-man powerplay goal by Shattock gave the Blazers a 6-3 lead before Betker made it 6-4 on a powerplay with 1:25 left.

Justin Leclerc stopped 27 of 31 Portland shots to gain the victory while Kurtis Mucha stopped 38 of 44 in the loss.

The Hawks went 2 for 6 on the power play while killing 6 of 8 man advantages against.

Another bad game for the Hawks. If there is any consolation, not as bad as the last two. We did score 4 goals tonight but gave up the lead and goals against at such a pace it seem like it was a hockey version of a layup drill.

The Hawks have brought in Dr. Saul Miller a leading Performance Specialist and Sports Psychologist to assist the team through these
trying times and get the team in the right mental state. The question is when will the Hawks make his services available to the fans.

Pats vs. Hawks - Game 23 · Wednesday November 21, 2007

The Hawks look to the stars and found that all their biorhythms are astrologically aligned at home on Tuesday nights. Go figure…two Tuesday night home games…two wins. That is 50% of all their wins. To the League, beware do not play us at home on Tuesday night.

The Hawks with stood a third period rally by the Regina Pats and got a late goal from Victor Sjodin (4) for the 4-3 win.

Is this team coming together? Mucha kept the Hawks in the game in the first period, making a number of good saves and letting the goalies best friend, the post, frustrate the Pats.

The power play came alive in the second with Radim Valchar (2) scoring on a two-man advantage and Travis Ehrhardt (4) fired a slap shot home on a one-man advantage to make it 2-0.

The third period started poorly for the Hawks with the Pats scoring twice in the opening six minutes with goals by Juraj Valach (3) and Logan Pyett (13), to even the score at 2-2. Portland got a break just over a minute after Regina tied the score, when an outlet pass by Regina hit an errant Portland stick and stayed in the offensive zone for Portland. Chris Francis (4) picked up the loose puck and fired a slap shot past Jeff Bosch to put the Hawks back in the lead 3-2.

Regina once again tied the score at 3-3 when Jordan Eberle (21) scored a turnaround spin shot from inside the left face-off dot, beating Kurtis Mucha over the blocker with eight minutes remaining. But, the Hawks keep at it as Sjodin picked up a loose puck in the slot and wired it home for the winner.

Two power play goals, one by a defenseman, block shots everywhere, bodies flying around, a goal in the third period to win. This is what Hawks fans have been waiting for.

Hawks vs. Hurricanes - Game 17 · Monday November 5, 2007

The Hawks made it a game despite being outshot 23-6 in the first two periods. Mike Wuchterl’s shorthanded goal midway through the third period was the game-winner as the Lethbridge Hurricanes held off the Portland Winter Hawks for a 3-2 Western Hockey League victory in Lethbridge. Adam Chorneyko and Cam Braes also scored for the Hurricanes.

Portland (3-14-0-0) got a shorthanded breakaway goal from Colton Sceviour (2) and a late power play goal from Tyler Swystun (8).

Overall the Hawks did not win the board battle and couldn’t generate enough scoring to make it close.
The Hawks spend most of the first period killing 3 penalties and generated only 2 scoring chances not enough to win many game, but they did hang in their making it a game at the end.
