Mucha and Jordan Made an Impression · Saturday November 8, 2008

The Portland Winter Hawks scored 2 second period goals in 12 seconds to beat the Spokane Chiefs 2-1 in Spokane Arena.

How did they do it?

With great goal tending by Kurtis Mucha, goal scoring (Taylor Jordan (1), Brock Cornish (2)), and a little help from referee Steve Papp or Colby Smith who didn’t blow their whistle on a shot in the mesh that setup Cornish’s goal.

The Hawks gave Mucha a two goal lead and he didn’t disappoint making save after save stopping 39 of 40 shots some at point blank range.

Another young Hawk player has impressed. In his short time back Taylor Jordan seems to have added another inch to his 6’6” frame and is starting to put it together. As a 16 year old he looked awkward; not in control of his body. Seeing him for the first time in the Oil King game I noticed his improved skating and strong effective floor-checking. He proved last year he could mix it up with the big boys. This year he is working well with his equally young huge line mates Kiley Boychuk and Taylor Peters and the group is starting to produce some scoring.

The new era starts with a two road win streak.

Come on boyz let’s win some games for the home crowd this weekend.

Tod Panchyson Acquired D-man from Lethbridge · Monday September 17, 2007

The Portland Winter Hawks acquire D-man Brock Cornish Todd Panchyson from the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Panchyson (6’-1”, 194) appeared in 29 games in 2006-07, his second stint in the Western Hockey League, scoring five points on three goals and two assists. Panchyson was a high draft pick in 2003 (1st round, 12th overall) and in exchange for the pick Portand gave up a conditional Sixth Round Bantam Draft choice in 2008.

After newly acquired D-man Brock Cornish shoulder injury, it was imperative to Portland Winter Hawk’s management to make a move to acquire another defenseman. According to Winter Hawks General Manager Ken Hodge the move was made to increase the depth of the current blue line.

The 18-year old from Nipawin, Sask. is eligible to play for Portland throught the 2009-10 season.

Brock Cornish for Rights to Galiardi · Wednesday September 5, 2007

18 year old Brock Cornish was acquired from the TC Americans for a 3rd round pick. This deal came together when Portland traded the player rights to T.J Galiardi for a 3rd round pick of the Calgary Hitmen.

This seems like a good deal for all involved. The TC Americans get a 3rd round pick for a player that may have issues
with the organization. The Calgary Hitmen negotiate with a 2nd round NHL draft pick of the Colorado Avalanche (T.J. Galiardi) that could bring a high-impact player to their front line, and the Portland Winter Hawks acquire an offensive-minded defenseman to run the power play.

For the Hawks it all depends on Cornish. Cornish had 3-7-10 in 31 games in TC last season after missing the start of the year with a broken leg.

The Hawks may look at this as a freebie, but Cornish seem to have issues at TC and after not signing Patrick Weircoich (a coveted 2005 2nd round bantam draft pick) are desperate to fill the role of an offensive minded defenseman.

Cornish had the following stats the last two seasons:

Sea Team Lge GP G A Pts PIM
05-06 Vancouver Mid 36 8 18 26 44
06-07 Tri-City AM WHL 31 3 7 10 44
