Hawks Start New Era with a Win · Saturday November 1, 2008

The Portland Winter Hawks (3-12-0-0, 6 pts) start the Gallacher era with a 4-1 win over the Tri-City Americans.

New Hawk coach Mike Johnston must be asking himself “what’s the big deal?” we just go out play sound fundamental hockey, add good goaltending (Kurtis Mucha 31 saves) and the puck finds its way into the net. once in awhile (Francis, Reddin, Boychuk, Valchar) .

I guess Mike didn’t know that we hadn’t won in the Toyota Center the last 9 times, and that last year we only had 3 road wins and we hadn’t beaten anyone by three goals since 10/5/07 (3-0 against the Everett Silvertips). It is best to forget these facts as quick as possible and move on to the New Era.

Hawks vs. Americans - Game 59 · Monday February 11, 2008

Portland Winter Hawks gave the Americans a game in the first two periods until Tri-Cities slammed the door with three goals in the third, final score 7-3.

Taylor Procyshen scored a pair of goals and the Tri-City Americans won their seventh straight with a 7-3 Western Hockey League victory over Portland, moving the Americans four points ahead of rival Spokane in the U.S. Division and Western Conference standings.

Quoted from the Mid Columbia Tri City Herald:

“You can’t expect us to be good every night,” said Americans coach Don Nachbaur. “We poured a lot into last night’s game (7-2 win over Spokane). We did enough to get by tonight, and we ended up on the right side of the scoreboard.”

“The last time we had a chance to go up on Spokane, we lost to Portland,” said Americans captain T.J. Fast, who finished with three assists. “This time we came out, played hard and came out with the win. The guys have been making it easy on themselves, knowing their roles and playing to their strengths. It makes it easy on all of us and has made us successful”

Shaun Vey (1-2-3) and T.J. Fast (0-3-3) each had three point nights for the Americans while Taylor Procyshen chipped in two goals. Radek Meidl, Colton Yellow Horn and Johnny Lazo also added goals.

Portland got a two point game from rookie forward Nick Dietrich, including his first career WHL goal, to get Portland back into the game in the second period, after falling behind 3-0. Dietrich’s tip in goal off of a Keith Voytechek feed made it 3-1 and less than two minutes later Dietrich set up Travis Bobbee for a partial breakaway that Bobbee finished with a backhand over the blocker of Kyle Birch.

Tri City made it 4-2 before the end of the second period, and then added another before Matt Schmermund scored on a power-play wrist shot to make it 5-3. The Americans would add two more to round out the scoring in the final period.

Next up Tri City on the road.

Americans vs. Hawks - Game 53 · Thursday January 31, 2008

The Portland Winter Hawks showed some life at home coming off a disappointing 0-4 road trip, but could not crack hot goaltender Chet Pickard and lose to the Tri-City Americans 4-0.

Shaun Vey had one goal and two assists while T.J. Fast (1 goal, 1 assist), Jason Reese (2 assists) and Johnny Lazo (2 assists) each had multiple point nights. Taylor Procyshen and Jarrett Toll scored the other goals for Tri City.

The story was Tri City’s goaltender Chet Pickard who would not be denied stopping all 33 shots some of the very dangerous kind.

Portland’s goaltender Jordan White also had a solid game stopping 40 of 44 shots and was given the third star of the game.

Tri City went 2 for 7 on the power play on the night while Portland was 0-4.

A defined improvement over the last few games, but to beat the top teams in the US division, the Hawks have to find some areas other than good goaltending to win games.

My first home look at new arrival Colin Reddin was very positive. The 17 year old acquired from USA hockey looks like he has all the tools to be a top scorer. He reminded me of Colton Sceviour with much more quickness and ice awareness. If he could get a few to go in early he could give this group some much needed confidence.

His skill set really came to life on the power played looking as dangerous as I have seen all year.

Next up Prince Albert home.

Americans vs. Hawks - Game 37 · Monday December 31, 2007

The Hawks scored first, put together some team defense and limit the Americans to only 38 shots for a 2-1 win at home.

Jacob Dietrich’s goal at 5:58 of the second period was a real beauty started off a pass from Radim Valchar, a break alone to the goal, deek to the right, and put it past goalie Chet Pickard on the left.

Tri-City defenseman T.J. Fast evened the score in the second period with a power-play goal at 4:28.

Colton Yellow Horn assisted on Fast’s goal, giving him 300 career points and extended his point steak to a WHL-leading 19 games.

Portland goalie Kurtis Mucha finished with 37 saves as the Winter Hawks (7-29-0-1) broke a three-game losing streak.

The Hawk back line missing (Kerr, Morrow, and Gabriel) were much better tonight. Travis Bobbee was a cool customer putting together the connecting backline pass after pass keeping the American from camping out in our zone. Bobbee deserved a star and showing why skilled nimble backline players like Bobbee and Ehrardt can make a big difference for the future Hawks.

Next up Seattle at home.

Hawks vs. Americans - Game 13 · Saturday October 27, 2007

Local boy (Gresham, Oregon) makes good . Unfortunately for the Portland Winter Hawks he plays for the Tri-City Americans. Jason Reese’s Hat Trick put the Hawks to rest on Friday night to give the Tri-City Americans a win over the Portland Winter Hawks 5-1.

Reese scored both goals in the opening period, one even strength and one on the power play, and then finalized his hat trick with a short-handed goal in the third period.

Portland’s lone goal came from rookie forward Luke Walker, the first of his WHL career, late in the second period on a feed from fellow rookie Lee Morrow, to make the score 2-1 going into the final period.

Jordan White was spectacular at times stopping 35 of 40 shots in net for Portland.

Tri-City went 1 for 8 on the power play, while Portland finished the night 0 for 7. Portland has yet to score a power play goal on the road this season.

The Hawks after their one game win streak are back to giving up a 2-to-1 shot ratio against and giving a high skilled puck moving team like Tri-City way too much confidence.

Overall a poor performance by the Hawks. With out Jordan White’s solid goaltending, the Hawks could have been down 8-1.

14:56 – Reese (2) assists Vey and Lazo.

17:17 – Reese (3) assists Procyshen and Reddick.

Period 2

16:38 – After a check from behind by Taylor Jordan on an American, McColm challenges Jordan for the only fight of the game. Kudos for McColm for sticking up for his team mate but he was over matched by Jordan.

Jordan the clear winner.

Hawks get back into the game with 3 seconds in the period with a goal from rookie forward Luke Walker (1) on a nice feed from the behind the net from rookie Lee Morrow.
