Chiefs vs. Hawks - Game 72 · Wednesday March 19, 2008

In a season where there weren’t a lot of highlights for the Portland Winter Hawks, the last shot of the season just may turn out to be a highlight remembered for a very long time.

Matt Schmermund, the Hawks fifth shooter of the evening in the shoot-out, made a behind the back deke and shot to beat Kevin Armstrong of the Spokane Chiefs and send the Portland Winter Hawks to a season ending 3-2 shoot-out win on Sunday evening in front of a season best 10,407 fans at the Memorial Coliseum.

Schmermund staked the Hawks to a 1-0 lead halfway through the game when he took a feed from Radim Valchar and rocketed a shot high blocker past Armstrong. Travis Ehrhardt also assisted on the play.

After Judd Blackwater scored twice for the Chiefs late in the second period to take a 2-1 lead into the final period, the Hawks rallied to tie the game in the third period when Ehrhardt pinched in from the point on the power-play and took a perfect feed from Tyler Swystun and slid it under the arm of Armstrong to tie the game with just over seven minutes remaining.

After a scoreless overtime, it went to 10 shooters, five aside, before Schmermund’s highlight reel goal ended the night and sent the Hawks into the off-season on a happy note.

Kurtis Mucha was outstanding in net for Portland, stopping 35 of 37 shots in regulation before stopping all five Spokane shooters in the shoot-out. Armstrong stopped 26 of 28 shots in regulation and only allowed the Schmermund goal in five shooters in the shoot-out.

Portland finished the night 1 for 6 on the power play, while Spokane went 0 for 3.to preserve the victory. Kurtis Mucha stopped Bowman and Ondrej Roman in the shoot-out as well.
